The Way It Was Before

We've had more years 
now like this than 
we had before.

It's been so long 
since then that
I can barely remember 
when things were like 
they were before.

A slow sad simmering 
just below the line
of how we live each day -
when it's no different 
than the rest
but far different from
the way it was before.
